Minibus Training |
MK Driver Training can offer a full package of Minibus Training, tailored to suit your requirements.
Any driver who passed their car test prior to 1997 can drive a minibus.
Very few of these, however, have been specifically trained in the different
skills and techniques required when driving a larger vehicle potentially endangering
their passengers. If you’re
looking to source independent help to give you that assurance, you’ll find our
Minibus Training fits the bill exactly.
Benefits to you and your company
- Improved driver awareness, confidence and skill
- Promotes a professional approach to passenger safety
- Enhances customer relations and your reputation
- Demonstrates a commitment to road safety
- Giving drivers the confidence and skills to carry their passengers safely and
securely
Preparing drivers for the responsibility of carrying passengers, and driving a vehicle that is, perhaps, significantly larger than they are familiar with, this course focuses specifically on building confidence and competence – and developing awareness of the relevant safety issues.
Whose vehicle – and where does training take place?
Minimising disruption to work and reducing your employees’ travelling time, training can usually be held at any UK location, by arrangement, using the participant’s own or allocated company vehicle.
Please note: the vehicle in which training is to take place must be legally roadworthy and fully insured, including cover for any additional driver that participants invite to share their session.
Training is delivered by a fully qualified, DSA approved Fleet Driver trainer.
Course content & agenda
The two courses cover the same key elements, although the full-day course will place greater emphasis on developing advanced driving techniques and safety awareness.
- Driver awareness: concentration, observation, anticipation, and the creation of space and time
- Understanding hazards and driver behaviour: reading the road
- Passenger care
- Loading and weight distribution
- The dynamic differences of minibuses: the effects of speed, loading & weather conditions
- How to plan the best route
- Forward and reverse manoeuvring
- Vehicle maintenance/preparation
- How to judge gaps and turning arcs
- How to be sure you are legal
MK Driver Training have a vast amount of experienced & friendly staff who can provide training and assessments for beginners, qualified drivers and for anyone wanting to go forward to take their D1 entitlement.
We offer two courses – half-day and full-day.
Half-day. The half day course is ideal for drivers who have some experience but need to improve their manoeuvring skills – or are, perhaps, changing to a different kind of vehicle and simply need a ‘refresher’. The course consists of on-road awareness training and realistic manoeuvring exercises.
Full-day. On the full day course, participants have more opportunity to hone their advanced driving skills and increase their awareness of the road environment.
Both courses offer a one-to-one, trainer/driver ratio. However, one additional colleague may share and participate in the training session at no extra cost.
Getting your D1 Licence
Anyone who passed a car-driving test on or after 1st January 1997 will not have category D1 on their licence. This is the category required to legally drive a minibus on the public highway.
A minibus is a vehicle that carries between 9 and 16 passengers.
You will first need to obtain an application form D2, available from us or the DVLA.
•• Medical requirements
Drivers of passenger carrying vehicles, including minibuses, have to satisfy a higher medical standard than car drivers. To obtain the appropriate medical clearance, first obtain the form D4, available from us or the Post Office. This form will need to be completed by a medical practitioner, usually your own GP, and must accompany your D1 driving licence application form.
Upon receipt of your licence, containing provisional D1 entitlement, you will be able to apply for your theory and hazard perception tests.
•• The Theory test
Consists of 60 multiple choice questions, time allowed 70 minutes. The test is computer based and the pass mark is 51 correct out of 60. Some questions require multiple responses.
In addition to the above, there is now a computer based hazard perception test. On completion of the multiple-choice test you have the option of a three-minute break followed by an optional practice session lasting 15 minutes. You can take the hazard perception test immediately if you prefer.
The hazard perception test consists of 15 video clips which contain a number of hazards that you must identify. The pass mark for this category of vehicle is 50 correct out of 75.
You will be given your results immediately on completion of both parts of this test. You have to pass both parts at the same time. A certificate will also be provided.
•• The Practical Test
The practical test must be taken in a minibus. The test lasts for 90 minutes, during which you will be required to demonstrate a safe and competent driving standard. Each driving fault will be assessed and recorded by your examiner. One or more serious or dangerous faults will result in failure, as will 16 or more minor faults.
As well as conducting a number of off-road manoeuvres, you will be required to drive on a variety of roads both urban and rural and answer some questions on basic vehicle maintenance.
Practical minibus tests are conducted at heavy good vehicle testing stations, not local car driving test centres. The standard required to pass a minibus driving test is high and you would be advised to seek professional guidance before taking such a test.
Who is this course designed for?
Drivers wishing to pass a DSA Driving Test or improve or develop their minibus driving skills. All course participants must hold a valid UK driving licence.
